From water sports and fly-fishing to traditional crafts, local delicacies and cultural performances, Bathing Carnival Bhutan returns for its second edition from November 6–8, 2026.

Bhutan is preparing to celebrate the joy of water as the second edition of Bathing Carnival Bhutan (BCB) takes place in Telung, Nganglam, in the eastern district of PemaGatshel, from November 6–8, 2026. Organised by the Department of Tourism, Bhutan, in collaboration with the PemaGatshel Dzongkhag Administration, the three-day festival combines adventure, cultural discovery and community celebrations.

Themed Celebrating the Joy of Water, the carnival draws inspiration from Thruebab, or Blessed Rainy Day, a Bhutanese tradition associated with purification, renewal and well-being through bathing in blessed water. While the inaugural edition coincided with the traditional occasion, this year’s event will take place later in the year, offering visitors a contemporary interpretation of this cultural practice.

Water sports, adventure and entertainment

Visitors can participate in a lively programme featuring tug-of-water competitions, mass bathing, water fights, bucket relay races and water balloon throwball. Fly-fishing will be another attraction for those keen to experience the region’s rivers. Other activities include balloon shooting, ring throwing and a laser light show, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Food and cultural experiences will complement the sporting activities. Bamboo mat dining will offer a distinctive way to enjoy local cuisine, while a Valley Fruit Feast will showcase regional produce. Visitors can also explore local markets and watch demonstrations of traditional crafts, including Tsatshi Buram, a local sugar candy, and the making of Dung and Jaling, traditional musical instruments. A group dance will bring the celebrations to a close.

A reason to explore eastern Bhutan

The carnival is particularly suited to families, groups of friends, adventure enthusiasts and culturally curious travellers seeking experiences beyond Bhutan’s popular western circuit. The event also expands its regional participation through collaboration with neighbouring Mongar Dzongkhag, offering opportunities to discover more of eastern Bhutan’s landscapes, rivers and living heritage.

PemaGatshel Dzongdag Singay Dorji describes the carnival as an opportunity to celebrate togetherness, connect with nature and discover the region, often referred to as the Lotus Valley of eastern Bhutan. The Department of Tourism sees the event as part of its wider effort to encourage travellers to explore lesser-known destinations and engage meaningfully with local communities.

Plan your visit for Bathing Carnival Bhutan

The carnival will be held from November 6–8, 2026, in Telung, Nganglam. Travellers can explore accommodation in Nganglam and the surrounding PemaGatshel region, preferably arranging their stays through local tour operators in advance. Food options to look for include Bhutanese specialities such as ema datshi, red rice and seasonal local produce, although the official festival menu has not been confirmed.

The organisers have not specified an entry fee in the available announcement, so visitors should check with Bhutan’s Department of Tourism or local organisers before travelling.

From 2027 onwards, Bathing Carnival Bhutan is scheduled to take place annually from November 1–3, establishing a regular fixture on eastern Bhutan’s tourism calendar.
